General Plan Amendment for Surplus Land at Evergreen Valley College Approved
(San José, Calif.) —The San José City Council this week approved a General Plan Amendment changing the land use designation from Public-Quasi Public to Neighborhood Community Commercial for 27 acres of surplus land at Evergreen Valley College (EVC).
San José – Evergreen Community College District requested the change in order to be able to lease a portion of the land to generate revenue to support programs and initiatives designed to increase access and improve student success at EVC and San José City College.
The change, which marks the latest step in a process that could eventually lead to commercial development on some of the surplus land, "would allow a broad range of commercial uses such as neighborhood-serving retail and services, and commercial and professional office development," according to a staff report given at the Dec. 13 Council meeting.
"This land has been designated surplus since 2004," SJECCD Chancellor Debbie Budd said. "I am thrilled that we will finally be able to utilize it to better serve students, while also providing much-needed services to the Evergreen community."
The motion to change the land use designation passed by a 10-1 vote.
