San José, Calif. – During its regular meeting Tuesday, July 12, the San José-Evergreen Community College District (SJECCD) board of trustees voted to place an education bond on the November 2016 ballot. If enacted by voters, funding from the sale of bonds would be used to construct new buildings and upgrade existing facilities.

“We have conducted a comprehensive review of what is needed on our campuses,” said Dr. Deborah Budd, SJECCD chancellor. “If we want to continue to provide the facilities needed in order to ensure that our students are prepared for transfer to a four-year university or to enter the 21st century workforce, extensive new construction and improvements to existing facilities are necessary.”

With its recently board-adopted educational and facilities master plans, the District has identified the most urgent needs on the campuses of San José City College and Evergreen Valley College, which include facilities that will help prepare students for high-wage, high-demand jobs, such as nursing, engineering, computer technology, and manufacturing.

“The Silicon Valley is leading the way in technology and innovation,” Budd said. “We need to make sure our students are positioned to contribute to—and benefit from—the exciting work taking place in our region.”

Funding from the bond would also be dedicated to constructing additional educational resources for veterans, improving Americans with Disabilities Act compliance and disabled access, repairing deteriorating water and sewer lines, replacing outdated electrical wiring, and bolstering the safety and security of the two campuses.

“Community college is the best higher education value in California," said Rudy Nasol, president of the SJECCD board of trustees. “We promise students a great education that will prepare them for transfer or the workforce, and in order to fulfill that promise we have to make sure that our facilities are up to par and contribute to the educational experience.”

The general election will be held Tuesday, Nov. 8.
